Modern Quilt Definition for Show Entries
How do you know if your quilt is “modern”? If you made your piece with the intention of it being modern—using modern fabrics and any of the following principles:
- Fabrics in bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color
- Improvisational piecing
- Minimalism
- Expansive negative space (Modern quilt blocks often have expansive areas of solid backgrounds, which can be any color from traditional white to a more contemporary gray.)
- Alternate grid work
- asymmetry—meaning most of the design is to one side and is not even squares or blocks
- Modern traditionalism or the updating of classic quilt designs (reinterpretation of traditional quilt block)
- pixelated designs—this is so unique to the digital age, yet it completely relies on traditional piecing
- "embraces a clean, modern aesthetic"
- straight lines and gray fabrics are a hallmark of modern quilting (quilting that is not ornate or feathery)
